Hyperion was born, without a surname, in the poor district of Omashu. His mother was homeless and could barely scrape by as it was, sometimes having to go so far as to sell her body to make ends meet; his father had been one of her clients and had no idea of his son’s existence. Hyperion grew up under harsh conditions and was taught to fend for himself from a very young age. Because his mother was a non-bender, she taught him how to find his way around a sword or knife. Any earthbending Hyperion had to teach himself, or by spying on lessons at the academy when he had the chance.

When Hyperion was ten years old, his mother died from an unfamiliar disease, leaving Hyperion orphaned. He refused to go to an orphanage, having lived on the streets all his life, and continued to take care of himself. He would occasionally seek the help of other children sharing a similar fate, but was on his own most of the time. He cheated and stole to feed and clothe himself and generally hid away to escape notice of the authorities.
His only guilty pleasure was a travelling theatre troupe that occasionally performed in Omashu. He would sneak into their shows whenever they were in towns and gawk at the costumes and decor of their plays. Usually, he was never caught – not until he was seventeen. He had been so immersed in the play that he hadn’t noticed the official coming towards. He darted away, only barely escaping.
He retreated into a tavern, where he sometimes went to drink his sorrows away. There, he was spotted by some members of the theatre troupe, who recognised him from the quick exit he had made earlier that day. Hyperion was invited to join them for a drink and, later that evening, to join them when they moved on from Omashu.
It didn’t take much thought. Hyperion had no prospects in Omashu, so he joined the theatre troop when they left Omashu five days later. He’s never looked back.

Since Hyperion had no acting experience, he was made to work as a stage hand. He was responsible for cleaning the costumes, selling tickets, and generally looking after the members of the troupe. In return, he was allowed to eat with them and sleep in their wagons. One of the actresses took a liking to him and started teaching him what she knew. She suggested him to the director for a small part in a play when he was twenty-two; after that, he was given more and more roles, though his main duties were still those of the stage hand.

Hyperion did more work as an actor as he grew older until that was all he did. His stage hand duties fell to a new boy, who joined them in Gaoling. The roles Hyperion played became ever larger, until he had to stand in for the lead actor when the man had fallen ill. Hyperion impressed the director so much that when the lead actor left the company several years later, Hyperion was given the position.
The position paid well, and Hyperion could afford all sorts of luxuries he never could in years previous. He could buy himself fine clothes and good drink and, most importantly, women (or men, whichever struck his fancy). Regardless, he used his money sparingly, putting most of it away along with the money he had made from stealing and cheating at cards over the years.
At the time, he wasn’t yet one for settling down, so the life with the troupe suited him just fine. He loved travelling and seeing all corners of the world, and so long as the money kept coming, Hyperion wasn’t about to complain.

As he grew older, however, he found that he began to long for a place to call his own that wasn’t the back of his wagon. When he was thirty and had saved up enough, he bought property in Ba Sing Se and founded the Saeculum Theatre Company. Some of the actors of the troupe went with him; some stayed with their original director, unwilling to commit to a young company. Hyperion quickly filled what positions he needed and started building.
The Saeculum Theatre Company started small, but grew steadily over time. Hyperion was a strict taskmaster and wouldn’t settle for less than the best, so his productions were always meticulously planned and designed. The more plays the company put up, the more people streamed into the theatre to watch. Sales went up, and with it the interest in joining the company.
As the company grew, Hyperion could step back from acting and focus on the management of the troupe. He was only half-sorry to give up acting. He had always loved it, but he found he was even more in his element as artistic director, when he didn’t have to remember his lines along with everything else.
To this day, the company does well, and Hyperion is perfectly at peace.

[] He took his surname when he bought the company, since he needed a surname for the lease of the property. It took some forged documents and lying through his teeth to make it seem as if the name had always been his.
[] “Dhatri” means ‘treasure’ – which is why Hyperion picked it in the first place.
[] Hyperion is alright as a bender, but he is self-taught, and he leans more towards training with a blade – he’s always thought it gives him an advantage, since he’s faster and can manoeuvre with greater ease.
[] He’s always kept up his sword training, even while with the acting troupe; he only practises his bending on occasion, just enough to make sure he doesn’t forget what he knows.
[] The actress who gave him acting lessons is also the first woman he ever slept with.
[] Though he’ll never admit to it out loud, he loves going back to Omashu with the company to perform there. It rejuvenates him immensely to think back on his childhood years on the streets, considering where he’s at today.
