Viva La Vie Boheme Empty Viva La Vie Boheme

Bericht van Ylva Nephelae ma mei 28, 2018 4:51 pm

How was it that all things good smelled so nice? On many occasions Ylva had quickly run her fingers down the pages of her paperbacks, holding them close to her face just to have the wonderful aroma fill her nostrils. This habit seemed to release a good shot of dopamine, which filled her up with a temporary feeling of something she’d almost call happiness. Coffee, another example. Although that smell could also give her a rather stressed feeling -probably because she always used it as a last resort. It was as her heels clicked on the stairs and her white dress danced around her legs, that another incredibly pleasant smell wrapped her arms around her and greeted her like an old friend. That of polished wood, black tape, dusty curtains and hard work; that of the theater. When she’d stayed in the Fire Nation Capital she’d seen enough plays to fall in love with the art of acting. In Ba Sing Se, however, it was a little less of a status matter to be an actor, and Ylva liked how that created a less stressed atmosphere. So when word reached her that the Saeculum Theatre Company premiered another play this evening, she simply had to descend from the top of the mountain that was her current residence. As she settled in her spot near the stage, she waited for the curtains to open and the play to commence.

There were few writers Ylva absolutely admired, so it was an absolute stroke of luck that one of them happened to have written this play. She’d read it so many times that her copy was starting to disjoin from its cover. Hell, she’d read it so many times that she caught herself mouthing the entire ‘What’s in a name’-monologue. (And the dialogue that followed, for that matter.) Chills had appeared all over her back and arms somewhere in the middle of the performance and didn’t disappear until she stood up for the ovation. Truly a marvelous adaptation.

The cool breeze that was so distinctive of early spring revived her and marked the transition from the magical world she’d just witnessed into the real world -slightly disappointing, Ylva had to admit. A pair of ocean green eyes met the mountains that were merely shadows against the dim night sky. It was a surreal sight, like run-out colours on a painting. Where the clouds cut off the massive rock, that was where Ylva Nephelae lived. In the clouds, just like her head. She was petrified of air bisons, so even though the way back to her house would be a long one by foot, she didn’t feel like going back. Not yet. She had a strange feeling of freedom running through her veins, and she wasn’t ready to restrain all of that energy when she got back home. ‘Home’, was that really what the Air Nation was to her?

The way she almost floated when she walked, was the only thing that could give away her actual nation amongst the grounded earthers. Difference in body language between the four elements was something that had always fascinated Ylva. She could almost instantly spot where someone’s loyalties lay, since she’d seen all four corners of the globe thoroughly.

She looked at the stars for a while, then decided to go for a drink.

The bar she entered was filled with vaguely familiar faces. She remembered several people from the audience, some from the stage. She might forget names, but she never forgot faces. Facial features were stored in a special database in her brain and stayed there forever. Anyway, in conclusion, she had ended up at the afterparty. A light smile bent her lips. Good. This should be fun. After an extensive investigation from a corner she had settled in by default, she spotted an interesting face. The director, who had entered the stage to give the then fading applause a boost again, standing at the bar.  She opened her clutch and got out the right amount of cash for her usual before she leaned over the bar to order a gin. Ylva turned to the chef the projet -whose name was something like Dahtri, if she remembered correctly- and ellegantly offered him the back of her hand, only half-caring about the group of other people that had formed around him. ’My compliments on tonight,’ she spoke, intentionally leaving out his name. The last thing she wanted was to come across as disrespectful to a fellow artist.

Viva La Vie Boheme Empty Re: Viva La Vie Boheme

Bericht van Hyperion Dhatri di mei 29, 2018 4:13 pm

This was the day. After months and months of planning, auditions, readings, rehearsals, alternating scenes, fine-tuning the details, marketing and, above all, waiting, the premier of the Saeculum Theatre Company’s latest play was finally here. Hyperion had arrived at the theatre early, as was his wont, to go over the final things with his stage manager and stage hands, but the theatre had filled up a while ago. Backstage was complete and utter chaos, as it always was during a premier: actors running to and fro to retrieve parts of their costume, even though they had stage hands to do that; the stage manager weaving his way through the masses to get to the other side of the stage; the stage hands ducking in between everyone, trying to stay out of people’s way and failing miserably.

Any other person might have wondered why there was still so much stress involved with putting on this particular play. It was an old favourite of the company, after all; they put it on at least once every few years. Most of the actors had performed it more times than they’d like to remember. Hyperion had directed it more times than he could remember. But still, somehow, it always felt like the first time, and still, somehow, it always turned out ever so slightly different than the last time Hyperion put it on. Each and every time, it was exciting to get to this day, this one moment when months of work would come together to create something achingly familiar and breathtakingly new at the same time. Hyperion lived for premiers – and he lived for the premier of this play, in particular.

Finally, it was time to begin. Hyperion gave his actors and staff one last pep talk and then sent them on their way. He would watch the proceedings from backstage, as he usually did. Most actors watched from the audience, he knew, but he wanted to be there to make some last-minute adjustments or give some final pointers, if necessary. Luckily, no one seemed to need them. The story played out exactly as they had rehearsed, no one messed up their lines, and everyone remembered their cues. They had never had a better premier – not one that Hyperion could recall, anyway.

His actors joined hands and bowed for the audience amidst thunderous applause. Hyperion breathed a sigh of relief as he watched them. He gave them their moment, as they well-deserved; it was only when the applause started to fade that he walked onto the stage, beckoned by his actors. He smiled at the audience and took a bow of his own, more modest than the one his actors had taken, because while he might have worked just as hard as they had in the weeks leading up to this performance, they had delivered their best work today, and they deserved all the credit they were due.

Once the curtain closed, there was a collective ease in tension. Hyperion left his actors to change and put away their costumes and make-up while he set the stage hands to work on clean-up for the night. Once he was satisfied that everyone was doing what they were supposed to be doing and the theatre would actually look presentable again in the morning, Hyperion waited near the exit for his actors to finish. It was a longstanding tradition amongst the company that they retreated into one of the bars near the theatre after a successful premier, so that they could unwind for one evening after months of preparation. Hyperion was almost positive that his cast continued this tradition on other nights than the premier, but tonight was the only night he would attend.

The bar hadn’t been all that packed before their arrival, but his theatre company wasn’t small and they quickly filled up the available space. Hyperion flitted between various groups of actors, congratulating them on a job well done and making general small talk that he hadn’t had the time or interest for in weeks past. Once he had passed by them all, he retreated to the bar to order a drink – or two. He was parched and exhausted and elated and he needed something alcoholic in his system yesterday.

It was at the bar that he was approached by an unfamiliar woman, who most definitely didn’t belong to his company, several minutes later. She looked elegant and dressed for a night out; by the cut of her dress and the height of her heels, and the fact that she had approached him at all, he guessed she had been in the audience earlier. His suspicion was confirmed when she extended her hand, the way a lady of standing might, and congratulated him on the performance.

Immediately, Hyperion took her hand and pressed a kiss to the back of it, the way he had been taught years ago. He smiled his most charming smile at the woman. “Thank you,” he said warmly. “We aim to please. I’m glad you enjoyed it.” He picked up his drink from the bar and gestured at the bar tender. “For that lovely compliment, may I buy you a drink, Miss...?” Never let it be said that Hyperion Dhatri wasn’t a charmer. Of course, if he went and bought drinks for every fan of the company that approached him, he’d be out of cash sooner than he could blink, but the fact of the matter was that he was rarely approached by anyone – so when he was, he liked to amp up the charm when he had the chance.

Ylva was not going to lie, stumbling across the entire cast and crew of a performance she’d just beheld and adored was somewhat of a strange experience. It was common to praise the actors after a play, but the author hadn’t been prepared for an encounter this scale when she had swung open the doors to an arbitrary bar for a quiet, simple drink. Excitement had swelled into roar inside of her and rushed through her veins. Stay calm, she had to remind herself. Professional. Blend in. She was roaming on Earthly grounds right now and thought it best to take on that characteristic level-headedness. That conclusion eventually led her to the bar, where she casually ordered her signature drink. Then, like she had completely abandoned her own set of rules already, she not-so-casually provided the director with the back of her hand after which she informed him on her compliments. Ylva knew herself, and she knew she was renowned for her inability to keep up her end of deals. Even -or maybe especially- the ones she made with herself. Mentally, she was shaking her head as a way of scolding herself all the while she was standing there with her arm outstretched towards the man next to her.

Fortunately though, mister Dahtri didn’t seem to think of it as that much of a cultural shock:  she soon felt his fingers on hers before he lifted her hand towards his mouth. After he’d pressed his lips on the back, he wore a smile. Contagious, as it seemed, since a smile bent Ylva’s lips as well. As she released her hand, he thanked her. ‘We aim to please. I’m glad you enjoyed it.’ There was a line she could relate to. (As a writer, not necessarily as a human being.) For that matter, she missed the freedom she had had when writing her first novella. No expectations, no anticipation and no crippling need to please. ’I hope you first and foremost aim to create, even after all this success,’ Ylva pointed out, accompanied by a rather absent smile. Hyperion -was it Hyperion? The name had suddenly come to mind, so it would make sense- had taken ahold of his drink and signed to behind the bar. He then turned towards her again and offered her a drink. ’Ylva. Nephelae,’ the author answered his first, suggestive question. No need to make the introduction physical, since she’d already gave him her hand once. ’Why, that’s very...’ -Charming sprang to mind- ’kind of you sir, but I’ve just ordered.’ Like she had spoken of the devil, her glass was just put in front of her. She thanked the bartender and raised her glass to level his. A barely visual grin lifted her freckled cheeks. ’But who knows? I may stay for a second one.’

Bericht van Hyperion Dhatri wo mei 30, 2018 3:17 pm

On the – admittedly very few – other occasions when Hyperion had been approached by a member of the audience or even, god forbid, a fan, the person in question hadn’t been a particularly inspired intellectual. That wasn’t a great surprise as such; Hyperion had always aimed to put on plays that appealed to both higher classes and the lower. Regardless, it was a very pleasant surprise to find that the woman opposite him did actually seem to know what she was talking about. She responded with a quick-witted quip that made Hyperion chuckle.

“Can’t they be one and the same?” he responded, taking a sip of his drink. “I aim to recreate and reinvent that which greater men than I have written, and in doing so, I hope to please others with their tales.” He gestured at the woman with his glass still in hand. “But it was an astute observation. Do I detect a fellow artist?” He hadn’t seen her before, he was quite certain, but she had a certain air and know-how about her that couldn’t be simply that of a mere lover of theatre. He’d been around long enough that he knew the difference.

Ylva – as she had introduced herself – politely declined his offer of a drink, though Hyperion wasn’t offended, especially when, as if by divine providence, the drink she had ordered before was set down on the bar. ‘But who knows? I may stay for a second one,’ said Ylva, raising her glass. Hyperion couldn’t help but smile as he touched his glass to hers. “I’ll do my very best to be enthralling company until then, in that case,” he returned before taking a polite sip of his drink, as etiquette dictated he should after a toast.

“So,” he went on, feeling entirely relaxed as he leaned against the bar, one of his elbows resting on the surface so that he could survey the room and look at Ylva with one simple turn of his head, “did our play bring you to Ba Sing Se, or were you in the area and did you just so happen to decide to grace our little theatre with your presence? I’ll warn you, I don’t think my heart could handle the rejection if your answer is anything but the former.” He gave her a roguish grin. He did have a flair for the dramatic. How else would he have ended up in the theatre business?

Before she even realised she was doing it, Ylva quickly unleashed a rather philosophical theory with regard to his answer. Hyperion -she was just going to stick to this and assume it for the rest of the evening because she didn’t really have another option now- however, seemed to gladly take up her ‘issue’ raised. Of course, they could have been words from a place of wisdom he naturally held inside of him, but Ylva couldn’t help but stare at the drink he took a sip of and wonder how many of those she was behind. Even so, ‘In vino veritas’ she believed the saying went. ‘I aim to recreate and reinvent that which greater men than I have written, and in doing so, I hope to please others with their tales.’ Yes, even if he would have been completely boozed up, he knew what he was talking about. So why not enjoy a conversation with someone whom she felt had a deeper understanding of what art meant? Turned out the man in question wasn’t only a respected artist, but also a rather decent detective. ‘But it was an astute observation. Do I detect a fellow artist?’ The words provoked her excentrique grin. ’Yours too. White Lotus material.’ For some reason, Ylva was hesitant to describe what she did. Maybe because she couldn’t really give it a name. She was a collector of stories, much like Hyperion in fact. She didn’t think of herself as an author necessarily, but she did publish books. ’Hmm, did I give it away? I write,’ she admitted with a nod. It wasn’t like she was trying to be reserved and mysterious, there really wasn’t anything more to it than that. See, she had already taken on the down-to-earth around her.

Ylva had politely declined his offer to buy her a drink. Although ‘declined’ might not have been the best choice of words, since she’d already ordered but had clearly let known that, should she have a second drink, that could be all his. She wasn’t going to pretend to be modest, for that would have been a lie. Their glasses clinged together and he responded: ‘I’ll do my very best to be enthralling company until then, in that case.’ Ylva grinned at him from over her glass before taking a daring gulp of her gin. No time for sophisticated sipping, she had a tally to catch up to. She then placed the glass back on the bar. After all, Hyperion had only taken a small amount of his drink and even though she was sure she could drink him under the table, maybe this wasn’t the best occasion.

Hyperion’s body language told Ylva that he felt comfortable here. Like this was his terrain. An extension of his second home. It made her feel relaxed too. It was strange how you could feel more at home at a place you had never been than at a place you had spent the majority of your life. She wondered whether she was born in the wrong season. To the wrong element. If that could happen, it had most certainly happened to her. After years of practice the air finally listened to her a little bit, but it had always been frustrating seeing her progress be way more slowly than that of her people her age. Her father had always told her that was her problem. That she was trying to control the air, instead of letting the air control her. Maybe she’d one day fully understand what he meant by that, although she kind of got what he was saying. Elements didn’t let you boss them around. ‘So,’ Hyperion ended her little trip up memory mountain, ‘did our play bring you to Ba Sing Se, or were you in the area and did you just so happen to decide to grace our little theatre with your presence? I’ll warn you, I don’t think my heart could handle the rejection if your answer is anything but the former.’ Ylva was surprised by the sound of her own laugh. She’d expected to have rolled her eyes at him, but he was being spared. ’The latter.’ As if being deadly serious, she picked up her glass again and took a sip, looking at him with big, innocent eyes like she was awaiting an answer. Good thing her career of choice hadn’t turned out to be acting, because it only took several seconds for her to break character. ’Am I cruel for testing your feeble heart?’ That was her way of apologising, be it with a twisted grin on her face and in an overly-dramatic tone. ’My arrival is solely dedicated to your striking performance, don’t worry. Should I ask how you obtained the knowledge of my not being a local or would that hurt my feelings?’ She could think of a few conspicuities, but was interested to see how he looked at her.
